Maria DiCecco's story starts in 1975 when Maria opened her restaurant, "The Food Works", at the corner of 5th and Penn in downtown Reading. In the heart of the financial district at that time, they often served over 600 people a day. Often preparing specialty platters for customer celebrations off-site, the business evolved to include a catering arm which became Penn Square Catering. The catering business was an icon for over 15 years, serving corporate events, cocktail parties, bank openings, and luncheons to the local businesses. In 2000, Maria sold the restaurant business but maintained the catering business relocating to a new commercial kitchen space in Mohnton.
As the business evolved to incorporate more party planning and wedding catering, a division, Celebrated Occasions, was added to the Penn Square name. What sets us apart is our attention to detail and consistently fresh, home-made food. Maria constantly pushes herself and her culinary boundaries with a focus on the unique and unexpected. She brings an imaginative flare to all of her food designs and presentations. And she balances a sense of whimsy and a timeless sophistication to continually surprise and delight her customers. The Celebrated Occasions staff has been personally trained by Maria, and many have worked with her since her Penn Square days.
Maria is an active and involved community member who believes in giving back. She is a member of the Berks County Chamber of Commerce, a past board member of Berks Women in Crisis, a graduate of leadership Berks, a sustainer of the Junior League of Reading, and a true supporter of Opportunity House.
